Allergy season starts in early spring, so it’s worth arming yourself with some good advice early. You can also complement traditional treatments with natural remedies. Dr. Krisztina Moric, ear, nose and throat specialist, allergist and head physician at the Allergy Centre Buda, recommends the following four ways.

1.
Nettle tea is a great way to protect yourself naturally, according to previous research by Planta Medica. 58 percent of participants experienced relief of symptoms with the consumption of 300mg of freeze-dried nettle per day, while 48 percent clearly felt better than with a placebo.
2.
An antioxidant called quercetin, found in onions, apples, broccoli, cauliflower, green tea and citrus fruits, has been shown to inhibit the release of histamine in the body and is used in medicines and supplements for its anti-allergy effects. Other antioxidants – vitamins A, C, E and selenium – are also effective in reducing allergic nasal congestion.
3.
Allergy sufferers may also find relief from bromelain, which is found in pineapple, among other foods. This enzyme has an anti-inflammatory effect and can therefore relieve allergy symptoms. It can also be found in supplement form alongside pineapple. Taking 400-500 mg three times a day can help to treat breathing problems and allergic inflammation.
4.
In addition to the previously mentioned nettle, papaya is also a good food to consume if you are naturally defending yourself against allergies. Its consumption may also be effective in reducing the intensity and frequency of migraine attacks and in treating the nasal symptoms of allergies. It is also available as an oil extract or in pill form.
Dr Moric stresses, however, that you should consult an allergist before treating allergies naturally. During pregnancy, natural treatments are preferred, but it is important to bear in mind that during pregnancy and breastfeeding, certain active ingredients and herbs should not be taken or should be taken with caution.
